UPDATE: Due to extremely low pre-registration numbers, the Adult Biathlon portion of the event has been canceled.  The 5K is still on go and you may register online through midnight on April 30th or on-site at packet pick-up and race morning.

Event History

The May Day Biathlon has a 25 year history in Burke County, begun in 1991 by the City of Morganton to promote the beauty and vitality of Burke County and to promote physical activity for youth and adults through healthy competition.  Two years later, a group of volunteer directors took over and, more than two decades later, the race is still going strong, making it one of the oldest races in the Southeast.

As Shores Multisport picks up the torch beginning in 2017, our mission remains the same: to promote physical activity to youth and adults through a well-organized race experience in a beautiful environment.

Shores Multisport seeks to pair each event that we do with a charity or non-profit group so that the impact of our events does not stop at the athletes' participation.  For 2017, the charity partner for May Day Biathlon is the Morganton Men's Group Bikes for Kids Program.  A portion of the proceeds of the May Day Biathlon events will be donated to support their work.

Event Overview

The May Day Biathlon is a two-day event.

The adult biathlon and 5K events are on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Both the Adult Biathlon and the 5K run begin at Freedom High School. Participants can complete just the 5K, which exits the Freedom High School property and continues along the Morganton Greenway for an out-and-back course, or they can compete in the Biathlon and follow up their 5K run with an approximately 18 mile scenic bike ride through the foothills of Burke County.

Race Day Details & Packet Pick-Up

Both events begin at 8:30am.  On-site registration and on-site packet pick-up will run from 7:00-8:00am.  There will be a packet pick-up option on Friday, May 5th at Di'lishi of Morganton from 5-7pm.

Volunteers!
No event would be a success without volunteers. We will need volunteers for both days of events and official volunteer registration will be available on the race registration website next week. Volunteers will receive a volunteer-specific Shores Multisport t-shirt. We will hold a volunteer informational meeting on April 29th (time and location to be announced) to make sure everyone feels informed about their specific tasks.
