Garden City Runners 20.20km Centenary Route

Race Instructions

Garden City Runners are looking forward to the Centenary Route Challenge circumnavigating Welwyn Garden City clockwise on 16th August 2026.

The event starts at 9.00am and finishes by 1.00pm at the South Lake in Stanborough Park.

Entry:

Free to Garden City Runners, £12 unattached, £10 UKA or ARC affiliated members of other running clubs.

Parking:

Stanborough Park, Stanborough Road, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 6DF. Please use the South not North Lake car park. The Lakes car park is free for 20 minutes, £1.50 up to an hour, £6.00 up to three hours and £10.00 all day. There is parking on surface streets for free and the nearest places are at Stanborough on the B197 Great North Road about half a mile away beyond the motorway bridge and the edge of Welwyn Garden City off of Stanborough Road a kilometre away. There is parking at Gosling Sports Centre ¾ mile away for £1.00 per hour. Payments for all car parks use apps.

Race HQ:

Race headquarters is at the start/finish at the end of the South ‘sailing’ Lake in Stanborough Park close to the railway bridge.

Baggage:

Bags can be left at the start/finish which is not undercover.

Toilets:

There are toilets at the North and South Lake. The ones at the South Lake are by the Terranova restaurant and are open from 9.30am, we intend to have them available earlier.

Starting Times and Finishing Window:

The distance is 20.20km, 12.55 miles and given the hilly nature of the course over much trail your half marathon time serves as a guide as to how long the route will take you.

Here are the start times:

9.00am for those over 3 hours up to 3½ hours

9.15am for 2½ to 3 hours

9.30am for 2¼ to 2½ hours

9.45am for 2 to 2¼ hours

10.00am 1¾ to 2 hours

10.15am faster than 1¾ hours

You must assign yourself in a group that reflects your ability/intended pace. There is no need to tell us beforehand. Simply turn up for your chosen group at least ten minutes before your intended start so that there is time to collect a number and be ready. The ethos of this training event is all about running together.

There are to be no finishers before 11.30am. To qualify for a finisher’s medal, and for Garden City Runner members an Avery participation point, you must start in an appropriate group and finish within the designated window of 11.30am to 12.30pm, with discretion up to 1.00pm for those who get lost or experience difficulty. No early or late starters accepted.

Course:

The Centenary Route was designed by the Council to commemorate Welwyn Garden City’s centenary of 2020, hence the distance of the same number. The route is marked by orange discs and it is advisable to run with someone who knows the way. Do bring a mobile phone so we can contact you if you do not arrive back at the finish before 12.30pm. If you are lost, need assistance or do not return to the finish then contact Peter Harvey on 07427 668093 from 12.00pm onwards.

For 2026 we are travelling clockwise, see map at the end of the instructions. Garmin links below.

Take care at junctions especially the main roads. The event is not a race and there are no prizes.

Conditions:

We recommend you pre-hydrate the night before the run. There will be a water station halfway around the course close to Tewinbury Farm. Do carry water and an energy  gel if you need them for a half marathon bearing in mind it can get very hot in summer. We also recommend applying suntan lotion. Medics will be in attendance.

We have a trail race permit.

Have a good run,

Yours in Sport
