Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Europe, with nearly half a million new cases diagnosed each year, and around 124,000 men dying of the disease annually. Caught early, the disease is curable. But unfortunately, because of a lack of organised and risk-based screening programmes in Europe, many men only receive a diagnosis when the disease has spread and is incurable. Late diagnosis has a serious impact on duration and quality of life.
At the same time, public knowledge about prostate cancer – what it is, how it can be detected and when to seek advice from doctors – is poor across Europe.
For the sake of men with prostate cancer, for their families, for overstretched health services, we need to spread awareness. Europa Uomo is dedicated to this cause, increasing knowledge of the disease so that men can take care of their own health, and receive the right diagnostics and treatment in time to be cured.
In our new Step Out for Prostate Cancer initiative we are asking you to take time out of your day to raise money to fund our awareness-raising work. Run or walk as much as you can - every effort counts!
“Because of lack of prostate cancer screening in my
country, my prostate cancer was detected late.”
